It’s an honor and a privilege to be a member of such a fine organization as CWops. I was first licensed as a Novice at age 13 in my home state of Rhode Island as KN1LDK. My first contact was with my Elmer, Maury W1OEO, who helped me with all aspects of getting on the air. I upgraded to general class within a year and was quite active on CW as K1LDK while in high school. I became interested in DX, earning DXCC, and in contests, particularly the ARRL CW Sweepstakes.
I put amateur radio on hold for a few years as I obtained my bachelor’s degree in mathematics, satisfied my military obligation during the Vietnam War period (as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service), and obtained my law degree. The one radio thing I did during that period was to upgrade to Amateur Extra.
I began my legal career as a law clerk on the Supreme Court of Rhode Island, then worked for several corporations and large law firms as a patent attorney before starting my own law firm, Radlo & Su, where I am still active. I practice patent law, export control law, and trademark law. Areas of technology in which I work include computer hardware and software, telecommunications, networking, cryptography, and artificial intelligence.
When I moved to California in 1974, I obtained the callsign AJ6V. I have been on the top of the DXCC honor roll since 2007, and have earned DXCC on 8 bands. I joined the NCCC in 1979, served as its President in 1984-1985, and am currently on the NCCC Board. I’ve operated in contests outside the continental U.S. on 10 occasions (9 CW and 1 SSB). My best showing was coming in third in the world as a single-op in the 2002 ARRL DX CW contest using the callsign VP5U. I was also a part of the P40V multi-multi team in the 1988 CQ WW CW contest, where we broke the existing world’s record by 40% but came in second in the contest to PJ9B.
My immediate family consists of my XYL Patty, our two sons (one is KF0AKQ), one daughter, and one two year old grandson.
My current station comprises an FT 1000 MP driving a KPA-1500. Antennas are a Force 12 C4 at 62 feet above ground, and a Gap Voyager for 80 and 160.
